Dining Room before and after (Наша столовая)

Before we moved here, this house was a 'student house'. This meant the upkeep was pretty much non-existent and we had a lot of work to do before we could move in. Our dinning room and living room were weirdly separated by a useless wall, and there was an ugly, red fireplace that was not usable, but took up a huge portion of the room. The ceiling was not even. The striped wall was separating the living and dining rooms.

Here is the before:

We took out the fire place and evened out the wall with plaster boards, which were also used to even out the ceiling. The wall is a normal colour after we put up white wall paper. Now, we have a pretty big, open space. Part of the wall separating the two rooms is still there because we have the stairs there, but it's still a lot better. Underneath the stairs, the hubby built what I call our Harry Potter closet  - it's a small space where we store cleaning supplies with a dead bolt lock so the kiddo can't get into it. We also have a pantry hidden there. It's not completely done though because our pantry door still needs to be fixed up along with a big list of other little projects. I'll post that once it's done.

Thanks for visiting,

How I meal plan

One of the things I do to save our family money is meal plan. I'm really pleased with the results so far. I meal plan every Friday morning because Fridays are when the kiddo and I go to the market to get fresh fruits and veggies, spices, and sometimes bread. I usually plan our family dinners, as well as the kiddo's lunches. This is how I meal plan:

1. Take an inventory of what we already have. Our fridge is pretty small, and the extra freezer we have is really not enough. I always freeze the veg that we buy at the market, so the first thing I do is look at what we have left over from the previous week. Because our fridge and freezer space is limited, there is usually not much left over. I look at the meat that we have, as well as pantry items.

New born baby essentials

I've been putting away some of my son's clothes that are too small for him and have been thinking about some of my new born essentials.  This is a very basic list.

Here is a list of some of the things the hubby and I found most useful:

● A baby carrier. We have the moby and we love it.  Even though the kiddo is almost one,  we still find it useful. When he was still new,  I would strap him in and get housework done while cuddling with the little guy.  It was wonderful.

Race car party haul

The kiddo is turning one soon!  And by soon I mean his party is in less than two weeks!  I realised this today so I took the kiddo out to get some fresh air. run errands and get party supplies. Before I show what we found, I will share some of my plans for his big day.

My hubby is a fan of all sorts of racing and he is building his own race car for a particular form of racing that is popular in our area. Coincidentally, our kiddo also loves cars. He loves playing with his toy cars/tractors and making a 'vroooom' sound as he moves them along the carpet. So it was logical to make his party car themed. I choose red, yellow, black, and white as our theme colours. We have home made invitations that have been mailed and I drew up some printables that I will post later (nothing fancy, just used word, but they will do the job). We are also ordering a cake in the shape of a race car for our guests, plus a mini sized one for the kiddo's smash cake. I also am getting a custom made onsie for him with a number one on the front, and which says 'birthday boy' on the back.

Eleven month old activity

My little buddy caught me by surprise today! I got him to sit in my lap for a full twenty five minutes - fully entertained. What did we do?

We played connect for... kind of.

He couldn't get it right away, but after a few tries, he managed to get the pieces into the slots. Afterwards, he found the parts on the side that hold the pieces and wanted to continue dropping the pieces in there. I also took the opportunity to teach him the colours (yellow/red). He didn't care about what I was saying, but I figure it's never too early to start.

I was really surprised by my munchkin. I had tried to do this a few days ago, but he tried to put the pieces in his mouth, so I put the game away after a few minutes.

This morning, I was trying to work, but the little guy wanted my attention so I took him into my lap and gave this a try after he reached for it. (Connect four lives on our dinning table, which is also my work desk, er where the computer lives).

So I am pleased to have been able to entertain the kiddo while playing something that is so good for his development (pincer grip, hand eye coordination).

Thanks for stopping by!

Easy, Healthy Recipes

Preparing healthy meals for my family is very important to me. I like to make sure that I am preparing meals that are healthy, provide loads of nutrients without sacrificing the taste. Something that really helps me to achieve this is to buy fresh produce weekly from the local market. I love seeing what new goodies the farmers are bringing and this also helps us to buy seasonally.

While I know that I want to provide healthy meals everyday, I don't always have the time to spend the day in the kitchen. Because of that, a lot of my recipes are easy! I like recipes I can put together quickly, freeze, or prep in advance. On this page, you'll find a list of my easy, healthy recipes (and a few treats!)
