Healthy pizza recipes: spinach pizza by Welcome to Mommyhood
We like pizza. A lot. A little too much even. You know what else we absolutely love in my home? I'll give you a hint. It's spinach. What's better than combining the two? Nothing. Seriously. Spinach + pizza = awesomeness.

See. That is awesomeness. Underneath all of those fantastic ingredients, there are a few cups of spinach, which just makes everything not only tastier, but also gives me the only somewhat false impression that this meal is really healthy.

It's funny, but food always makes me feel so connected to a particular culture. Whenever I make some borsch, I always feel 'so Russian'. Similarly, there is always something so nostalgic about whipping up a homemade pizza that reminds me of the years I spent living in the United States. Albeit, this particular pizza was made by my Dutch husband, eating pizza always makes me feel a bit American. Is that weird? I associate food with particular countries, cultures, or experiences I had, but it's such a fantastic medium for bringing people together and learning about others that it just makes sense for me.

Let's just get on to the point! Here's another one of my healthy pizza recipes (depending on what you think of flour and grains):

Spinach pizza recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 portion of my spinach pizza dough (note: we replaced the spinach with water this time, but it's even better if you use spinach)
  • 5 mushrooms (thinly sliced)
  • 2 cups spinach
  • 3 slices of salami (chopped up into strips)
  • 1/2 a small chorizo (or sausage)
  • 6 olives sliced into thin strips
  • Optional: 1/4 cup grated cheese
  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary (or 1/2 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon salsa
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the pizza dough ahead of time based on which ever recipe you are using
  • Prepare the sauce by mixing together the herbs, olive oil, tomato paste, salsa, and salt and pepper
  • After pre-baking the dough, smear the sauce on there
  • Then add the spinach
  • Followed by the other tasty ingredients
  • Sprinkle the cheese on top
  • Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes on 175 degrees Celsius or 350 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Dig in straight away!

The thing that I love about making my own pizza is that we can control the amount of 'crap' we throw on there. It's also not nearly as greasy as the store bought stuff. Whenever I'd eat pizza in the US, I remember having to take a napkin to it to mop up some of that grease. Ick. Plus, we can limit all of that salt.

I know salami and sausage may not be the best for you, but we control exactly how much we want on there. More cheese? Go for it! None at all? Go for it! It's really up to you and whatever you feel like eating at the moment, and that is what I love about cooking at home. It's whatever I want, whenever I want it... as long as I have all of the ingredients on hand, of course.
