Mulled wine recipe {From France}

Have I ever mentioned that time I 'lived' in France to you? Probably not, but I did kind of. For about half a year. It was a ridiculous experience in good food, okay, amazing food, delicious wines, and fantastic cheese type of way. 

I rented a horrible flat with a friend, and our landlord also had a small restaurant nearby. I guess he took pity on us, two young women that were barely twenty with limited cooking skills. So he occasionally shared cooking tips, let us sample some of his amazing wines, and spoke French to us like French people do (which was fine because I actually speak it but needed to work on my accent. It was helpful not condescending. Just to be clear). 

I look back at that time fondly, also because perhaps a few too many evenings were spent enjoying some amazing mulled wine. Obviously, I had to learn to make it perfectly for fear of upsetting the landlord. Okay, not really, but I definitely did want to learn about wines and food from him. And this was the result of that:

Today, I am sharing this very simple recipe for a fantastic mulled wine that I learned to make from my restaurant-owning-landlord during my stay in northern France.

This drink is so warming, comforting, and so fragrant! While I don't have alcoholic drinks too frequently, this is definitely a fall/winter favourite of mine.

12-15 minutes



Kitchen Tools

  • 1 pot
  • 1 knife


  • 1/2 bottle of wine (half a litre). I prefer a wine that is not fruity, but other than that, I suggest finding a wine you like and sticking with that.  
  • Half an orange or 1 mandarin 
  • 2 sticks of cinnamon
  • 14 cloves 


  • Slice fruit in half and squeeze the juice into a pot you will be using to cook the wine
  • Place all remaining ingredients in the pot
  • Bring to a boil
  • Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes 
  • Remove orange, cinnamon, and cloves from pot with a slotted spoon
  • Serve warm and enjoy {responsibly of course}
