Creating a nature table

During the winter season here, we don't really have snow. Or nice weather either. It's usually rain, and especially now that I have to use a wheelchair, it means that we stay indoors a lot more than during the summer.

Even during the periods of the year where we spend more time indoors, I want to expose my child to nature and it's beauty. One of the ways I like to do that is by creating a simple nature table. By taking some of the outdoors inside, I try to expose my kiddo to some beautiful, natural elements.

Playdough activities: snowman play dough mat

Y has been loving play doh lately! Play doh activities are a great way to build up fine motor skills and strengthen muscles in little ones' hands. Because we are working so hard on learning the letters of the alphabet, as well as writing, I'm also focusing on activities that develop specifically these skills on our shelves. You can read more about our Letter of the Week Series to learn more about how I am teaching Y the alphabet!

Today, I am sharing a fun, free snowman play doh mat! You can print this, laminate it, and have your little one build a snowman on it! They'll be strengthening important muscles and working on prewriting skills with this printable! It's perfect for this holiday season!

Letter F themed activities

For this week's set of works, I chose two themes to roughly stick with - farm and fruit. Because planning for this series had actually started quite a while before we went live with it, I had thought of having our farm theme coincide with the Letter F, but eventually ended up publishing our farm unit separately because it was huge.

This week, I chose our Letter F themed works as a review of a lot of the works we had covered during the farm theme. Some of the photos you see then will come from that unit. A lot, of course, are new! In either case, I highly recommend that you checkout my farm unit and free farm printables for tons more hands on activities! There are several wonderful science experiments that Y loved, too!

Letter Ff printable pack

Welcome back to the next letter in the Letter of the Week series! Today, I am sharing the newest free printable pack for the letter Ff! This pack  contains over 50 pages of wonderful printables that can help your little ones learn the alphabet!

Y has been loving working on these activities! It's been so inspiring to watch him pick up on the letters we are covering. Funny story- last week, I noticed how much he's really getting out of it and how much he's learning when a friend came over to visit.

His friend is about 6 and is currently learning to read at school. Of course, she's learning in Dutch, but we are doing Y's letters at home and are using my mother tongue (Russian). Y brought her some of his letter activities so they could do them together and started explaining to her what the letters were. It was so sweet, but the poor girl was so confused!

I explained to her that the alphabet is different and some of the letters may look the same but have different sounds etc etc. Interestingly, I also learned that the kids are taught phenotic letter sounds at school here instead of the letter names, as well.

Sound matching jars

DIY sound containers for preschoolers by Welcome to Mommyhood #montessori, #preschool, #soundcontainers

Y has been very attentive to sounds lately. Whenever an airplane flies overhead, a car drives by, something falls, etc, Y asks me 'What's that noise?'.

Because of his interest in his sense of hearing, I created an auditory work drawing upon inspiration from the Montessori sound jars.

Bloggy break and Letter of the Week

So December, right? How in the world did it get here just so quickly? This month is terribly busy for us with several large celebrations. Between St Nicholas Day coming up this Saturday, to Christmas, and New Year, we have so much going on.

That is why I'm going to be taking a sort of bloggy break this month. However, Letter of the Week will only be paused this week. Next week, I will return to the normal flow of Letter of the Week posts. Letter of the Week will also be on holiday during the week of Christmas. Other than that, you can expect it to continue.

During my bloggy break, I will try to be around on social media, so if you have a question, don't hesitate to get in touch with me!

I'm going to be using this time to focus on my family, as well as hopefully getting caught up with some reading and blog tasks for next year... but if I feel like it, you may see a few Christmas-y freebies on here! We'll see!
Happy Holidays! And good luck with prep!

Letter of the Week: Letter E Printable Pack

For those of you in the United States, I hope you had a fabulous Thanksgiving yesterday! One of my friends from high school is staying with us this week and on Wednesday evening, we decided to have a Thanksgiving celebration. Thanksgiving doesn't exist in the Netherlands of course so running to the store the night before was not terribly chaotic.

Planning a Thanksgiving meal for family on the day of? Surprisingly, it wasn't stressful at all! I'm not too sure how we managed to pull it off, but we had an awesome Thanksgiving meal prepared with zero prep work or planning. It was magical.

Seriously. Not only did we have amazing food, but cooking with a girlfriend that I have known for over ten years, catching up over stuffing and pumpkin pie? Glorious! Thanksgiving was pretty perfect. My only regret was that we had written down our amazing pumpkin pie concoction.

Aside from Thanksgiving celebrations, I was also prepping out Letter E shelves for the Letter of the Week series! Today, you are getting the Letter E printables! Scroll down to download your own free set below!

Letter of the Week Review A-E printables

For today's letter of the week post, I am sharing a review of the letters covered!

Since starting the Letter of the Week series with my friend Amruta from Mumma Diaries, I have noticed a huge increase in Y's interest for learning about the alphabet. As we learn new letters, I want to make sure that we continue to review and practice the ones we have already covered. That is why today, I wanted to take a small 'break' from the usual progression. Instead of sharing the next letter, I am sharing two sets of fun printables for reviewing the letters already covered in this series.

This printable pack includes:

  • Beginning sound clip cards
  • Beginning sound sorting cards

Christmas fine motor activities

Today, I am so excited to be participating in the 12 Days of Christmas blog hop! There are tons of amazing Christmas ideas shared by some fantastic bloggers!

Christmas fine motor activities by Welcome to Mommyhood #12daysofchristmas, #preschoolactivities, #montessori, #geoboard, #christmasactivitiesforkids

I am sharing a Montessori inspired fine motor activity with several variations.

Christmas fine motor activities by Welcome to Mommyhood #12daysofchristmas, #preschoolactivities, #montessori, #geoboard, #christmasactivitiesforkids

My husband made a sort of geoboard for us!

How to make your own Christmas tree geoboard

He used a block of wood and nails in the shape of a Christmas tree. To get the shadow, you can use a cut out of a Christmas tree and spray paint. My husband used a wooden cutout and a small blowtorch.

Christmas fine motor activities by Welcome to Mommyhood #12daysofchristmas, #preschoolactivities, #montessori, #geoboard, #christmasactivitiesforkids

This idea doesn't need to be used per se for the holidays - you can easily do the same thing in any shape or form! I love the theme for this time of year though!

Christmas fine motor activities by Welcome to Mommyhood #12daysofchristmas, #preschoolactivities, #montessori, #geoboard, #christmasactivitiesforkids

This type of idea is so easy to make, but is a wonderful way to get little fingers working, as developing many other skills. These include:

  • fine motor skills
  • hand eye coordination
  • creativity
  • shape recognition
  • prewriting practice

The first variation we did was simply using rubber bands. However, there are many ways to use this board! Christmas decorations and little knickknacks serve the same purpose, but also allow creativity when exploring this board.

We also used a beaded chain (from the Christmas decoration stash in the attic)

Christmas fine motor activities by Welcome to Mommyhood #12daysofchristmas, #preschoolactivities, #montessori, #geoboard, #christmasactivitiesforkids

As well as ornaments

Christmas fine motor activities by Welcome to Mommyhood #12daysofchristmas, #preschoolactivities, #montessori, #geoboard, #christmasactivitiesforkids

Y also exercised his own creativity and got out some nuts and washers to use as ornaments!

Christmas fine motor activities by Welcome to Mommyhood #12daysofchristmas, #preschoolactivities, #montessori, #geoboard, #christmasactivitiesforkids

Lastly, we also used some fake ivy. The idea was to bend it into whatever shape or form Y wanted.

Ultimate collection of delicious butternut squash recipes

So butternut squash? It's pretty much that time of year when I incorporate all sorts of pumpkins and winter squash into essentially all of my meals. The only thing is that the husband claims to dislike foods like butternut squash, pumpkin, or even sweet potato.

Well, he says he doesn't like it, but when I add it to meals like chili, pasta dishes, or even baked goods, as long as he doesn't know I added any of the 'banned' ingredients, he'll tell me how delicious the dish is. So I hide it. Luckily, the kiddo also shares my love of all things squash.

Inspired by my family, I scoured the internet for some amazing butternut squash recipes. Here is a collection of over 50 delicious butternut squash recipes - I'm sure there are plenty of ideas for the non-lover of squash, too! Whether it's breakfast, dinner, a snack, or even a drink, this round up has it all!

It's that time of year - butternut squash, sweet potatoes, and pumpkins are constantly on my mind! Last summer, my in laws planted butternut squash in their garden for the first time. This fall, we've definitely been enjoying the benefits of their work!

Since my injury, I've been on the hunt for easy, healthy recipes, especially kiddo approved ones! These butternut squash and apple muffins were definitely successes in both the easy/healthy compartment as well as a total hit with Y.

Avoiding plastic for meal time with kids

I am so excited to share with a peak into some of my favourite items for my son's meals! Bowls, plates, containers for on the go and more!

When it comes to our son, the Hubby and I really try to avoid plastics. We choose to go for quality materials that are durable and safe for him. Recently, I swapped out all of the remaining plastics bowls and plates we occasionally used for him. Y now only has bamboo, stainless steel, and whatever 'normal' plates we use for ourselves.

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience!

I do have one note - we waited to buy bamboo plates until Y no longer dropped things from his high chair as much because these can break. The items I include in this round up are a bit pricier than 'normal', plastic materials. For us, we started by swapping out plastic for stainless steal and then after I was fairly confident that bamboo plates would survive in our home, I finalllllyy purchased some items.

We picked out a few, high quality items that seemed particularly useful and practical for our family. I am so happy them and want to share the items that we have been loving, as well as a few items on my 'to buy' list!

Psst! Christmas is coming up, and these would make fabulous gifts!

Halloween cut and paste

Y is still having a blast with practicing using his scissors! We used this very simple Halloween themed cut and paste activity recently and Y loved it!

The kiddo had a fever and wasn't feeling well all weekend. This was one of the few things he actually wanted to work on instead of staying in bed all day. Of course, I gave him many, many cuddles and tea, too.

Veggie loaded quinoa fried 'rice'

Since getting home from the hospital, I have to admit that cooking has been quite a challenge for me. I actually came to dislike it for a while there as I struggled to figure out how to do it efficiently, enjoy it, and not get completely exhausted from it.

Yea all that. And then I realised I was getting into the habit of feeding Y bread and unhealthy snacks far more than veggies and 'real food'. I needed to get back to easy, healthy meals for the family. After a bit of reflection and a few episodes of Master Chef Australia (seriously, go watch it!), I was inspired to at least cook something.

The past week or so, I finally got that fire and passion back that I used to have for food and I am so, so excited about it! I love cooking for my family, I love exploring flavours, using fresh produce from the garden, all of it!

Quinoa fried rice by Welcome to Mommyhood #quinoarecipes, #healthymeals, #healthykidsrecipes

One of the ingredients I used a lot of last week was quinoa. Y has been asking for it, which coincided with our grains preschool unit, and I was happy to oblige.

This particular recipe has a 'stir fry' or quinoa fried 'rice' sort of vibe or inspiration behind it. It was good. Like really, really good. The husband didn't even leave leftovers for me!

Aside from being super tasty with bits of pan fried, delicious quinoa, yummy veggies, and gooey eggs, this recipe was quick and easy

Seeee! Easy, peasy veggie goodness! ... with quinoa!
