Winter Activities for Kids: January practical life/fine motor trays

Mr. Toddler adores practical life or fine motor works. He loves being able to do. I have to admit that our works haven't been rotated as much as he needs lately and he's been asking every day to go work. 'New works, mama? Let's go work!'

I spent quite some time during my short break from blogging making up a huge bundle of printables that will be making their way to our shelves in the month of January. They're going to be 'winter' or arctic themed, with a large shapes and colours printable pack! I'm really looking forward to sharing those with you (all for free) throughout the month as they make their way to our shelves.

For now, here's a peak of what's to come with a focus on Montessori inspired practical life and/or fine motor trays!

But first here's a question: do you prefer these large photos so you can see the details? Or is that distracting and the smaller size reads better? I'm torn, and would love to read your opinions!

Now, here are the practical life and fine motor trays we will be using throughout the month of January!

Winter Activities for kids: Montessori inspired

Tweezing

Mr. Toddler has been intrigued by some toy tweezers we have at home. However, I'm not impressed with their quality, and dug out some of my own (sanitized them first).

This child adores 'picking' at things (peeling stickers), and I figured I would really challenge those little fingers by presenting a tweezing work with some sequins.

Except he wasn't that into it and preferred to do this as a pouring work.

Pouring

These are pretty self explanatory, and are hands down Mr. Toddler's favourite types of works!

Tonging

We also have not done too much with tongs yet so I want to get these out on the shelves this month, as well.

Unlike the tweezing work above, these next three trays have not made their way onto our shelves yet, but will fit into our works later in the month.

Tonging 'snowballs' (cotton balls)

Tonging beads out of water. I love incorporating this white ice cube tray, too because it adds a bit of one to one correspondence to a practical life work. Mr. Toddler loves water, and I have a suspicion, he'll ask for another bowl after he's done removing the beads to make this a pouring work.

This snowflake tonging work did make it onto our trays sort of. It ended in a glitter explosion going off in our homeschool room (which is also my husband's and my temporary bedroom).

I had a bottle of glitter out for a different work, but Mr. Toddler wanted to explore and I almost immediately regretted that decision as he dumped out the entire bottle into the bowl with the snowflake stickers. The sweet thing was though that he vacuumed with me after exclaiming 'uh-oh, Mama! Glitter on table! Glitter on table!' Mr. Toddler likes things neat and usually cleans up his own messes straight away. Thank you Montessori!

Threading

I presented a simple beading work with 'snowballs' (white beads). We've done beading many times before, and he enjoys it, so a simple beading work is out.

Spooning

Whenever there is a spooning or pouring work, Mr. Toddler is instantly drawn to it. Here are a few January themed options.

Snowballs (cotton balls)

Rice (Like snow...? It's white so it works I suppose)

Icicles (Diamond shaped beads)

More snowballs (assorted white beads)

A math themed spooning work. Here Mr. Toddler had to sort the pom poms into the bowls by colour. He has been loving sorting works, so I wanted to turn a simple spooning work into something more challenging. This tray was definitely a hit!

From my arctic unit

I showed you guys our arctic themed works in the beginning of the month of December, but they work beautifully for a winter themed unit. Here are some more ideas {also be sure to checkout the arctic unit for some great free printables}.

1 to 1 correspondence using a spoon and 'icicles' (more white beads)
