Penguin shape printables

Because of all the unexpected crazy going on in our lives right now, I'm afraid I haven't been sharing our winter themed printables with you lovely folks lately. I still have a bunch of that I'm not sure what to do with. Do you still want to see them? Have you moved onto other themes like Valentine's day and spring?

I already have our Valentine's themed works on the shelves. Seriously, I have no idea how I managed that. I've even prepared a few spring themed works. I actually figured we're done with winter here in the Netherlands.

And then it happened. It snowed.

Granted, the snow lasted a few hours before melting away, but at least Mr. Toddler actually got to see it and could relate the snow themed works we've done to something real. Last year, it also only snowed once. And not even at Christmas.

Because of our recent snow, I am going to share at least one more winter-y themed printable with you guys!

Mr. Toddler absolutely loved these penguin themed cards, and they actually ended up being an absolute favourite.

They also helped Mr. Toddler to learn his colours. The kid blew me away by naming them exactly as we reviewed, sorted, and had fun exploring shapes!

It's actually funny with my son. We've done plenty of works with shapes, colours, and all sorts of math themed activities. But these penguins (an animal he's been quite interested in lately) really caught his attention.

A simple set of cards with a fun image simply transfixed him. He sat down with me and for 20 minutes or so, he quietly sorted the cards, while naming shapes and colours I hadn't even realised he had learned.

We review both frequently during playtime, but I hadn't heard him use the terms with such accuracy and confidence before, making me one proud mama! Be sure to get your own free penguin shape and colour printables below!

The fun thing with these cards is that they can be used to work on multiple concepts:

  • Colours
  • Shapes
  • Matching
  • Sorting
  • Pre-reading (matching images)
  • Visual discrimination

Older children can sort the cards based on the shape, colours, or both.

For younger kiddos (toddlers), I created an alternative set of cards, where the shapes surround the penguins. This is a great way to practice pre-math and visual discrimination concepts for younger kids.

Mr. Toddler started learning his shapes in this way, as well, like what we did in our Hibernation unit.
