Healthy snacks for kids: Heart 'Cookies' for Valentine's Day

Making sure Mr. Toddler is getting healthy meals and snacks is very important to me and my husband. However, when holidays and special occasions roll around, I do think it's fun to let Mr. Toddler try new or holiday themed foods. Today I am sharing a simple recipe for a healthy snack that your kids can actually make themselves!

Time

5-10 minutes

Kitchen supplies

1 knife or chopper knifefor kids
Measuring spoons
1 plate or cutting board

Ingredients

1 apple
1 tablespoon almond (or nut butter of choice)
1 teaspoon chia seeds

Instructions

The fun thing about this recipe is that it is very simple and is definitely something little ones can make themselves (with proper adult supervision).

To start, Mr. Toddler got to wash his apple. Afterwards, I cut it into slices, but if you have one of these nifty knives (chopper knife), you can also let your kids do that step themselves.

Afterwards, I presented the apple slices, and Mr. Toddler used a cookie cutter to make hearts out of the apple slices.

This was definitely his favourite part! So much concentration went into getting the hearts just right!

After he was finished with his hearts, he took a butter knife and spread some almond butter on to his slices.

The last step was a sprinkle of chia seeds (or whatever seeds or toppings you enjoy!), and Mr. Toddler got to dig in! Well, rather wait for me to finish snapping photos, and then he got to dig in.

Funny story, he's really catching on that Mama likes to snap photos of our food. This weekend, prior to eating lunch, he asked to use my phone and actually started making photos of the items we had on our table. Well played child - perhaps you'll get to see the Toddler's photography in our next What I Ate Wednesday post!
