Poultry Seasoning Recipe

I am kind of obsessed with keeping things in the kitchen all natural and such. It really is important to me to keep our meals healthy (sans additives and e numbers), but still full of all sorts of delicious flavours! 

One of the most important ways that I add 'oompth' to our meals is with the seasoning that I add to them. A teaspoon of this and a pinch of that can take a dish from bland to a harmony of flavours that make your taste buds dance. No really, it happens. 

Today, I am sharing something incredibly easy that will take your poultry or chicken (or even your veggies, I won't tell!) to a whole new level with my delicious poultry seasoning!

I like to buy packages of dried herbs or spices from the market near where we used to live. I love that there is less waste buying them this way because they are packaged in paper, and once we are home, I make assorted spice mixes that I store in glass jars. 

The problem I have with store bought spice mixes is that they don't just contain herbs and spices. If you read the ingredients list, there are also e-numbers, food colouring, and they contain ridiculous quantities of salt. While I sure do love my Himalayan pink salt, I don't want my spice mixes to consist of 30-50 percent salt, especially if I am going to be sharing with my toddler. 

The solution is to quickly make my own mixes where I can control the quantity of each ingredient, and where I can know that I didn't add any icky chemicals. During the summer months this is even more true because we use a dehydrator to dry herbs that we have grown in our garden! It doesn't get more organic than that!

One of the biggest 'side' benefits I have discovered from making my own spice mixes is that it is also so much cheaper! I don't remember exactly how much pre-packed spice mixes cost in the US (although food in the United States is so expensive in my opinion!), but I do remember thinking 'whaaat', when my husband and I visited Kroger on our last trip to my family. 

When you make your own mixes by purchasing the spices and herbs separately, not only is it healthier, but it ends up being cheaper as you can use one ingredient, such as oregano, in more than one mix (chili, pasta seasoning, chicken soup!). The possibilities and combinations are endless, and the best part is that you can adjust them all to your specific preferences and needs!

Today, I am sharing a favourite in my home - a simple poultry seasoning that we have been loving lately! We use it in soups, for pan fried chicken breasts, and on and on. It's been a go to this winter with deep, rich flavours that just warm you up inside! 

Time


5 minutes

Ingredients 


1 tablespoon thyme
1 tablespoon sage 
1 tablespoon dried coriander 
1 tablespoon rosemary
1/2 tablespoon smoked paprika powder (or normal paprika powder if you prefer) 
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon marjoram
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions


Mix all ingredients together 
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place
