Letter Dd activities

Today, I am so excited to share with you guys our letter d shelves! We had so much fun this week combining letter D works with a dinosaur theme! Y loves dinosaurs and couldn't wait to get started with these works. Let's keep this intro short and get to the works!

Letter of the Week: Letter D activities

Weekly learning binder

Every week, I include a new set of printables in our weekly learning binder.

This week, I included:
  • I spy game
  • Dinosaur matching cards
  • Dinosaur shadow matching
  • Sorting diurnal and nocturnal animals

Note: both the dinosaur matching and animal sorting activities can be done either by printing two sets of cards from my Letter D Printable Pack or by matching these animals to figurines, such as:

Letter D practice

One of the activities Y has been loving lately is anything related to painting. I included a simple invitation to paint, using his toy dinosaurs instead of paint brushes.

I used a Letter D play dough mat from my Letter D printable pack. The idea was for Y to put some paint into his paint palette, dip the dino feet, and make the prints to form a letter D!

Another work that he absolutely loved was this simple capital and lower case letter gluing work.

Originally, intended for this to go in the learning binder, laminated and have Y sort the capital and lower case letters. However, I ran out of velcro recently and thought to have Y practice his gluing skills with it instead. He has been loving it!

This next one is a letter D maze! Because the word tree starts with 'd' in Russian, I added little wooden blocks as a manipulative for this work. Y had to place the blocks onto all of the letter Ds. For the English equivalent, you could use little dinosaurs or dinosaur eggs to make it a themed work. Or dot markers would work just as well.

I also prepared Letter D pre-reading cards. These cards contain images of objects that start with the letter sound we are reviewing that week. I sometimes also include a letter object basket - Y can then match the objects to the cards. This week, we had so many other fun activities on the shelves that I simply didn't get around to compiling the basket.

Practical life

Of course, a bit of practical life had to make it into our unit! Y loved this simple 'dinosaur egg' spooning work! He actually turned this into a counting work and started  counting how many eggs there were in each colour.

Note: You could easily turn this into a math and practical life work by providing one larger bowl full of eggs, and 3 empty ones alongside the spoon. Be sure to place equal quantities of each colour egg into the larger bowl. Then, have your child sort the eggs based on colour using the spoon. A great pre-math and practical life work in one!

Scissor practice - the kid loves scissors. Of course, this is a very important skill for him to learn and I am very happy to oblige his desire to practice!

Making a dinosaur

I  bought a dinosaur plaster casting kit for this unit. Y was so excited to make his own dinosaur and then paint it. He concentrated so much and honestly, it was just so cute! I love watching him concentrate and think about his work. I did give him instructions for how to make the plaster, but he did the work himself!

I also bought a few dinosaur excavation kits. I have to admit that the ones we ordered were a bit different than this one that I linked to above, and we struggled a little bit with it. Or rather, it took a bit of effort to get the dinosaur 'fossils' out. However, Y absolutely loved it and had a blast getting the dinos out.

What I really liked is that our learning didn't stop with the hammering and chiseling. This was a great opportunity to talk about how dinos are extinct. Also, the kit included the full skeleton of the dinos so we put together a complete T-Rex model once all of the bones were released. That in itself was a great opportunity to work on vocabulary. I simply used a Montessori 3 part lesson with the bones and Y learned tons of new words!

Just for fun!

Dinosaur counting cards

Again, I used our handy sandpaper numbers, number cards from my Letter D printable pack, as well as dinosaur figurines. Y had to match the number cards to the sandpaper numbers, and then place the corresponding quantity of dinosaurs onto the number cards.

 Matching dinosaurs to their footprints

For this work, I simply traced the footprints of some of Y's toy dinosaurs. He had to match the dinos to their tracks. A fun extension would also be to trace your child's foot and show him/her his/her own footprint!

Making dinosaur fossils

This is one that we worked on over the course of a few days. This was the first work we did for this week and Y was very intrigued by it! We made dinosaur fossils!

To make your own dinosaur fossils, you will need

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water
  • Mixing 'tools' (whisk, spoon, etc)
  • Mixing bowl

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 200F/100C
  • Combine all of the ingredients together
  • Roll out dough
  • Cut off small pieces
  • Make prints from toy dinosaurs
  • Place in oven for 3 hours
  • Let cool

After the 'fossils' dried, I used them for matching work alongside the dinos that we used to make the prints. Y found it very interesting to see his creations back on the trays! He was quite proud and showed everyone in the house that he made dinosaur 'cookies'.

Note: warn your kids and other family members that these aren't meant for eating. My in laws thought these were cookies when they were cooling. Luckily I warned them before any tasting happened- these are half salt and would taste awful!

All in all, this week was very fun! Y has been doing very well in learning the letters so far and this week, I actually ended up focusing more on the D is for dinosaur theme than the actual letter we were studying.

This was pretty intentional because I don't want him to get burnt out. So far, he seems to be catching on and enjoying the works so I wanted a good balance/break.

For next week's shelves, I'm going to focus more on the actual letter we are working on, with a few more printables as well as review of the letters we have already covered. Be sure to come back next Tuesday and Friday to see what we do!
