If you celebrate, I hope you had a lovely Christmas! We're back for the next installment of the Letter of the Week series that Amruta and I are hosting.

Please, be sure to visit Amruta's blog Mumma Diaries and wonderful youtube channel for tons of inspirational activities!

A note before we continue - Friday, January 1st will be another break in this series. We will continue after that on Friday, January 8th!

Weekly learning binder

I realised when putting this post together that it really seems like I am just throwing a bunch of 'extra' printables together for this learning binder so I have a disclaimer of sorts. The way I set up all of the activities, works, printables, etc on this blog are purely inspired by my son.

My son (Y) is 3 years old and he is really enjoying this series. I can really tell that he is currently going through a sensitive period of letters. He asks me about letters all the time and points out many that he sees in books. He also is asking me about writing. He's getting a lot out of the 'worksheet' like printables at the moment and enjoys working on them so I make quite a few for our letter binder. I'm going to write a post specifically showing you how we set this up soon!

Here's what we worked on in the binder this week:

Includes

  • Playdough mat (laminated and used with a dry erase marker for writing practice)
  • Capital and lower case sorting
  • Stamp the letter
  • Letter maze
  • Prewriting practice/cutting practice
  • I spy mat

Learning the letter

For the past few weeks, I've been experimenting with how Y prefers to use our prereading cards. I finally realised the format that seems to work best for us is to turn them into a book. Suddenly, he's very interested in them!

I created this mat thinking we would use it with dot markers, but I changed my mind after I realised how many crafts we already had for this week. I presented this mat (the English version is the same except that the letter Gg is on there, of course) alongside some blue vase fillers. This way, we can reuse it.

Crafts

The idea with this one was a 'G is for Grass' craft, but then my mother in law brought in all of these beautiful supplies for a Christmas wreath she made and I snagged some for our letter craft. For the Russian, I used 'г для гнездо', which also doesn't quite work, but you get the idea - glue something resembling grass onto the letter.

Another great craft you can do for the English version is a 'g is for grapes' craft using the printable I have in my Letter G printable pack or construction paper. The result is something like this:

Practical life

Like I mentioned during my Letter F trays post, practical life works are very important to building up skills for writing. You can read more about why that is in my Letter F activities post.

Spooning 'goose eggs' works perfectly with the theme, right? In reality, it doesn't matter much what the object being spooned is, it's about the kiddo making the motion, practicing grip, etc, but I love to keep things themed.

This week, I created a lacing printable. It wasn't quite ready when I took this photo, but sunlight was fleeting. Again, you can understand the idea for the presentation - a simple tray, the printable, and a shoe lace in a bowl.

Gorillawashing! Y really loved this one! I had a smaller gorilla and a larger one and Y had a blast with some pretend play here. He said they were a baby and Mama gorilla

Note: Y does works like these on his mat. He gets it out himself, unrolls it, places the work on there, then cleans everything back up, including rolling the mat back up and placing it in its spot.

I created a gluing work using a letter G puzzle.

Lastly, we worked on pouring 'gold' (gold coloured beads) from a pitcher into two small cups.

Writing practice

Y has been asking repeatedly for writing practice activities. Here are some ideas for the letter G.

G is for gift tracing (or cutting) practice:

Pin pricking.

Colouring in the letter G. I used our wall art mat in Russian, which is a little bit different than the English version. However, the play dough mat included in my printable pack would also serve the exact same purpose!

And then there was this one! It was perhaps the most fun and special work this week! It was by far my favourite actually, and took the least amount of time to set up!

For Sinterklaas, Y received some of the scratch papers from us. I created a simple tracing activity for him. I loooove these papers, and so does Y! I remember making these when I was at summer camp as a child, and think they're just so much fun!

You can get a similar doodle pad on amazon.

Gift matching using felt 'gifts' I made for a Christmas busy bag last year.

I made this particular work a little while ago for some holiday themed trays, but this would also work perfectly for a letter G tray. I traced around lego duplo pieces and Y had to find the correct quantity to make the gifts whole. This is great practice for learning fractions! I love sneaking in learning!
