I mentioned a few times during the Letter of the Week series, that practical life works are very important. This is because they are precursors to writing.
Practical life trays, activities, or however you call them, help to develop fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, strengthen muscles in fingers and hands, and pencil grasp in children. These are, naturally, very important to learning how to write.
Today, I am sharing what will be on our January practical life trays! These are simple, fun, easy to set up activities that will keep little hands and minds engaged!

Y loves stickers lately! Working on peeling the backing off of the stickers is a great way to work on fine motor skills! Those things can be tough to get off!
While this isn't a tray, what's more 'practical life' than doing practical life! We made oven baked sweet potato fries! Y chose the spices and herbs and added them to the potatoes.
I combined a math and practical life work here! We used cotton balls to represent snowballs, tweezers, as well as wooden numbers . Y had to lay out the numbers 0-5 and the tweezers to lay the corresponding quantity of 'snowballs' underneath each number.
Y can use a spoon very well, but this work is about precision. He had to spoon confetti from one bowl to another using a very small spoon. It's quite difficult to do without spilling!
Using the same confetti, Y practiced pouring into two bowls.
Spooning assorted beads from one bowl to another. He used a simple melon ballerto transfer the beads.
Spooning chestnuts from our chestnut tree in the backyard!
Spooning 'snowballs' into two cups.
Tonging 'snowballs'. These tongs are larger and are fairly difficult for Y to use. He's very persistent though, and really tries to use these with accuracy.
