Christmas addition strips

We are having so much fun working on all sorts of Christmas activities this month! I am so excited to be sharing our simple Christmas addition strips! Y has been loving these for working on simple addition facts! Have a look below to see how we turned this simple printable into a fun, hands on learning activity!

Christmas Activities:

Addition Strips

Age: 4+
Why: These Christmas themed cards are a great way to practice simple addition. These cards can be used in a Montessori environment, as well, and can easily be used to create hands on activities or as work sheets.

A note on manipulatives

Using manipulatives with works like this is a great way to show children how much a number is. It allows them to visualise quantity and learn what a number symbol represents.

We use different types of manipulatives, but really, anything that can be used to count.

Presentation

To use our printables, I like to cut apart the strips and keep this work very hands on. You could keep the sheets whole, and use manipulatives to help your children count the answer.

As always, I like to keep presentation simple. Our 3 part card trays work perfectly for these strips.

Additional options:

  • You could laminate the strips and have your child use a dry erase marker to fill in the answer rather than the provided number cards.
  • Alternatively, you could laminate the strips and add velcro to the strips and numbers. This could extend the life of the printables.
  • Don't laminate and simply have your child write in the answer.

I introduced addition to Y with printables like this for the first time. I cannot even explain how excited he was to be able to add and caught on immediately!

I do have to admit that I was very surprised at how quickly Y seemed to catch on and learn to add. I think it was because he was truly ready to learn addition, and just give so much credit to how Montessori believed that learning will come easily during children's sensitive periods for given topics/materials. I really enjoyed being able to teach him something new that seemed to just flow! It was such a wonderful experience!
