Teether recommendations for babies

I have to admit - I have babies on my mind! We still don't know what the sex of our little babe is which means that I have been (not so) patiently waiting to start getting things ready for his or her arrival. I'm still convinced that it's a boy, but both Hubby and Y are adamant that Baby is a girl. I'm so excited to see which one it is!

For now though, I've been looking into getting little things here and there that would work either way. Today, I am sharing a post on baby teethers. I do want to point out that while some of these toys can be used as rattles or to strengthen hand muscles, they are ones that I am recommending specifically for babies to chew on. I'm going to be sharing our rattles recommendations separately so keep an eye out!

One thing that is so important for my family is that we try to really limit the amount of plastic, chemicals, 'yucky stuff' etc that we have in the house. Basically, we try to lead a pretty natural lifestyle and try to limit our footprint on the Earth.

When it comes to choosing products for our kids, my husband and I really look to natural materials that are good quality. We want our children's toys, clothes, or whatever it is, to last and we want to know that they will be safe with the items we choose.

When it comes to teethers in particular, it's really important to look for the types of materials you feel comfortable with letting your baby chew on. These items will go in their mouths of course, so it's important to know what you are purchasing. For me, I tried to look for good quality, sturdy materials, and ones that are free from BPAs and phthalates. The majority of the teethers that we like are wooden ones.

Another little hint - when Y had very achy gums as a baby, I would express some breast milk and freeze it. We had one of those net feeders that I would put the breast milk 'popsicle' into and let him suck on that for a few minutes at a time. You also want to be careful not to let them have it for too long as they could get uncomfortable from being too cold.

Letter of the Week: Letters U and V

Summer is really into full swing here! We're really enjoying a lot of time outdoors, bike rides, and visits to the play ground! Of course, we still try to get some 'structured' learning into our days, but I have to admit, there's much less time for it at the moment. Besides, what better way is there to learn than spending time outdoors? Y is loving it, that's for sure!

As summer gets more and more hectic, we're going to be wrapping up our fun Letter of the Week series! Today, we are sharing printables for letters U and V, available for free below! Be sure to grab your own copy!

What's on my Montessori book shelf (for mom!)

I don't know how often I've mentioned it here, but by profession, I am a researcher. I love books, learning, and well... researching actually. I'm a bit of a 'nerd' like that. This summer, with baby number two on the way, I have been really enjoying re-reading some of my favourite books on Montessori.

Whilst our homeschool activities and approach is definitely varied, using a mix of techniques, our lifestyle and how my husband and I raise our son is heavily influenced by Montessori. We love encouraging our son's independence, and plan to do the same as our next baby is born.

Today, I want to share some of my top picks for parents when it comes to the Montessori philosophy. This list is most definitely not exhaustive. I don't want to overwhelm anyone and there are tons of books, blogs, and resources out there! Rather, it is based on the books I have read, I have enjoyed, and ones that you can use to learn more about Montessori. This list is a good start for someone wanting to know more about the Montessori approach to learning, implementing Montessori style ideas in their homes or lives, or looking to expand and refresh their knowledge of the Montessori method!

Happy reading folks!

Paralysis & Pregnancy: 10-13 Weeks

I'm really excited to be sharing the next update on my growing 'bump'! Our little baby is has grown tremendously in the past ten weeks. We are all getting more and more excited as each day goes by! Y especially can't wait to see the baby and play with her. Y still says it's definitely a girl, but I'm still convinced it's a boy. We'll find out for sure at our 20 week anatomy scan, but for now, here's the update on weeks 10-13!

Beat the heat! Set up a car wash!

Beat the heat: set up a car wash activity by Welcome to Mommyhood #summeractivitiesforkids, #preschoolactivities, #kidsactivities
It has been hot here. Suddenly, the rain and wind have disappeared and instead we have heat. You guys know I live in the Netherlands, right? Well, here's the thing about Dutch homes - most don't have air conditioners. In fact, I don't know anyone that has air conditioning at home. This makes it hot.

So to escape the heat a bit, one of our favourite things to do is set up a car wash!

How to use 1 material to create multiple activities

Bringing new life to old activities: how to use 1 manipulative to make multiple activities by Welcome to Mommyhood #montessori, #homeschool, #preschool, #preschoolactivities, #montessoriactivities

I have to admit that I just adore collecting manipulatives and little tid bits for Y's shelves and activities. The thing is though, those little things that we buy tend to add up - not only in cost, but also in storage space. That's why I love to reuse materials and try to find new ways to bring life to either 'old' activities, or use a material in a new way.

Today, I am sharing multiple ideas for using one material: today, we're all about seashells! With the weather warming up, it's perfect to create seashell themed works. You even get bonus points if you go to the beach and collect the shelves yourselves!
