Panda Salt Tray Cards

We're winding down with our simple Chinese New Year theme. I ended up keeping our works pretty simple as we ended up focusing a bit more on our Arctic study than I had expected, and then moved on quickly to Valentine's Day

Y has been so interested in learning to write, reading, and practicing penmanship. As a result, I have been very busy creating engaging writing activities for him. Today, I am sharing our Panda themed salt tray cards and our fun take on setting up a writing tray for Chinese New Year! Y has been having a blast with these!

Prereading Activities: Hot Versus Cold Classification Cards

Happy Wednesday everyone! This week seems to have gotten a bit crazy for me. I've been so busy with creating new materials, working on the blog, and also hopefully arranging a new home for this little blog. I hope it goes well, and I'll keep you guys updated in case there are any glitches or problems. I'm so excited!

This week, I've haven't had much time to rotate our works for Y. It seems that baby girl has been going through a growth spurt as she has gained one kilo and grown 5 cm in the last few weeks! This past week in particular, she's been so clingy and has been constantly wanting to nurse. I'm so exhausted and starving aaallll of the time from it, but oh my, it's so worth it.

Oh, another happy story - Natasha smiled at me intentionally for the first time last week! I tried to snap a few photos, but was too late, of course. Ohh, it was just the sweetest thing. She was fussing, but I came to her and once I started speaking, she smiled so happily at me. My heart just melted!

I love all of the firsts that come with having a baby! I'm beyond happy to have this little gal in our home. Y loves her to pieces, too! We really have to remind him he can't cuddle her whenever he wants, but the kiddo just loves giving his sister kisses and has even tried to share his food with her. He has good intentions, but we need to keep an eye on those two.

Anyway, my entire rambling on babies was meant to say - because of N's growth spurt and cluster feedings, I haven't had much time to rotate works for Y. I did however have time to prepare new printables that are ready to hit the shelves! Here is one of the fun printables I created: hot versus cold classification cards!

Valentine's Day themed science activities

Y is such an inquisitive young boy! He loves to explore, ask questions, and figure out how things work. To encourage his love of learning, I have searched for some awesome science experiments that you can easily set up at home with a fun, Valentine's Day theme! These activities are perfect for this time of year, and are great to conduct with inquisitive, young minds! It's also great how easy they are to set up, which is always a win in my mind!

Valentine's Day Pin Punching Activity

Valentine's Day is approaching soon, and of course, kids are busy making fun crafts, cards, and decorations! Our home is no different, but I do like to offer some form of semi-structured activities. For that, I set up invitations to create - where I present certain materials that focus on specific goals or targets for my son to work on while he makes a fun project.

Today, I am showing our Valentine's Day Pin Punching printables that we use to create fun cards for friends and family - something that Y has absolutely been loving lately!

Winter activities: free winter number puzzle printables

I am beyond ready for warm weather. It has been so cold here lately - I just can't wait to start getting outside more. Seriously, getting outside with a teeny baby and using a wheelchair when everything is covered in a thin layer of ice is just yucky. I can't be too bothered with it, but Y gets bored staying indoors as is to be expected with a four year old.

We don't even have snow to enjoy playing with, just cold, gray weather because that is what happens in the Netherlands - so much gray and cold! How about you? How's the weather where you live? Are you enjoying building snowmen?

Beautiful places in China image cards

Our China unit is winding down With Y being only 4 years old, I decided to keep it pretty simple. That and we were also working on our Arctic themed activities at the same time. One of the resources that Y did get a chance to enjoy was this set of Beautiful places in China image cards. These cards feature images of beautiful and well known places in China with the name of the landmark underneath the image.

Respecting our children: how we raise our children

I love Montessori. I think it is a truly fantastic way to teach children. Really, that must be no surprise if you come on here regularly. If you're new, welcome! Today, I want to have a sit down, let's chat discussion with you lovely folks! I want to gush a bit about the beauty of Montessori.

For my husband and I, the way that the Montessori method teaches children just clicks and makes sense. However, for my family, at home, Montessori means so much more than just teaching - it is the way my husband and I see our children, treat them, and really, how we treat each other.

A deep and profound aspect of the Montessori method is respect for the child. Not that I think you have to adopt a Montessori lifestyle in order to respect your children, but that is at the heart of how we live our Montessori inspired lives - a beautiful relationship of mutual respect.

Free Panda Number Cards for Chinese New Year

Counting is a very important skill for children to develop. In teaching little ones to count, it is very important to make sure they learn number quantity rather than only learning number order or even recognizing number symbols. Learning to count is much more than just learning 1, 2, 3 etc.

In preparation for Chinese New Year, I created some simple panda counting cards. These printables are perfect not only for a themed unit study, but to really demonstrate to children how much a certain quantity is. How much each number represents is just as important as learning the order that numbers go in.

You can use these panda inspired cards to help your children learn how much each number is! The printables are available for free at the bottom of this post!

Will it melt the heart? experiment

When there is ice and snow on the road, we all see those trucks sprinkling salt on the roads. There is a very logical and simple reason for this. Recently, I presented an experiment to show exactly how and why this is done!

I mentioned last week that I am pretty excited about our Chinese New Year shelves! I really loved being able to visit China when I was 17 (more than ten years ago! oh my how time flies!). I really enjoyed putting together China themed learning activities for my son, and having a chance to remember and reminisce on my time in China.

Today, I am sharing a China inspired printable for younger kiddos - a Panda themed cutting strips freebie! You can read about how and why you can use these printables for your own toddler below.

Black and white arctic animal cards

As you have seen, we have been working on tons of fun arctic themed activities this month with Y! Of course, I don't want to leave out Baby Natasha, so I created some black and white image cards that she could also use!

Psst! But the fun thing is that these cards could also be used for toddlers. I created each card both as completely black cards as well as black and white, outline cards. Toddlers could use these as matching cards to create a fun visual discrimination work. You can read below why visual discrimination is a very important work for young tots!

Valentine's Day Addition Clip Cards

Is it me, or did is this month just flying by? I mean, I'm still kind of surprised that it's already 2017, but now we are getting Valentine's Day activities ready! Of course, because of blogging, we get these ready a bit early, but still... it's a little wild! I suppose a big part of it for me is having two little ones to manage - time just gets away from me!

Today, I am sharing one of our Valentine's Day themed printables. These are missing number additon clip cards! They are perfect for practicing addition!

Beautiful Places in China 4 part cards

One of the most amazing trips I have ever been on was to China when I was 17 years old. I am so grateful that I was able to experience the culture and see so many beautiful sights.

I went for two weeks with a group of friends, one of whom had family in each city we went to. From the food, to the unique architecture, to the truly breath taking nature all around us, I will never forget the memories I made while I was there.

And oh my gosh, the history. I don't know if you have realised it or not, but I'm kind of a bit of a geek. I just love history, and reading, and learning. And that country is just so full of all things history and there is just so much to learn! Every where we went, it just feel incredible to know that so much had already happened there!

That trip actually was one of the biggest confirmations for me to pursue a degree in International Relations the next year when I went off to university.

Okay, okay, my background isn't per se why you are here! Today, I'm really excited to be sharing a new printables set that is all about China, inspired by Chinese new year, approaching on January 28! Be sure to scroll down below to learn more about these fun printables and how you can use them to teach your children or students about China!

5+ natural cleaning recipes that are safe for kids

When it comes to cleaning my house, I have to admit that I am a little bit obsessive. I am very particular about what I bring into our home and that is especially true for cleaning supplies.

I really like to avoid harsh chemicals, and don't purchase many cleaners. Personally, I hate the smell of harsh chemicals and bleach. When using these cleaning products, I tend to get a headache afterwards and feel dizzy as I use them. My son also likes to participate in our daily routine, and I definitely don't want him to experience any of those side effects.

Instead, I prefer to make my own at home. This way, I know exactly what goes into our cleaners, and know that they are safe for my family.

Today, I am sharing several recipes for household cleaners that are even safe for children to use! Perfect for a Montessori home!

Pattern Cards for Babies

I can't believe it but baby girl is already two months old! We've loved having her join our family and learning her character. She's a pretty calm baby, as long as she's not wanting to nurse that is.

Natasha can also be quite serious sometimes. It's so amazing, but infants can already concentrate and focus, even being as young as they are! I love watching Natasha explore the world around her - which at this point means watching and listening to what is happening around her.

To help her work on improving her concentration, as well as just to give her something fun to look at, I created these black and white pattern cards!

DIY number cards for toddlers

Counting cards are a great way to practice number order and number quantity for young kids. With Y, we started practicing counting and number recognition from an early age, since he was around two years old.

Today, I want to show you a quick way to make some DIY number cards for helping your child to practice counting while adding a fun, hands on component!

Breastfeeding tips and advice

Baby Natasha has been breastfeeding for about two months now! First of all, how crazy is it that she's already so big? I'm so happy that our nursing relationship has been going so well. I really find it such a beautiful process and I cannot tell you how wonderful I feel about being able to bond with my baby in this way.

However beautiful it is, breastfeeding can be hard, especially during the first few weeks. I was very lucky to be able to have a lactation consultant come to my home and give me some wonderful advice. Today, I want to share some of the tips and advice that have helped me to nurse my son for 20 months and now my daughter for hopefully just as long or longer!

Arctic animal number clip cards

We are really excited to be moving further with counting, adding, and practicing basic math skills. Y has a very technical mind, like his daddy. I can already see that he tends to lean towards activities that are math based rather than language based.

To accommodate him, I have been making math printables with more and more challenges for him. Today, I am sharing our Arctic themed number cards.

Winter play dough activities

You guys, can you believe it's already 2017? Wow! 2016 was a crazy year with a new baby, moving, and opening up Tot Labs! It's been a wonderful process, and I'm so honoured that you are here, reading about our adventures, now as a family of 4!

Today, I am sharing a collection of some beautiful winter themed invitations to play with play dough! We've been loving our winter themed activities, but play dough is also a really fun way to work on important skills for kids.

Working with play dough develops fine motor skills in young children and helps to strengthen the muscles in their hands. This is very important to writing and being able to properly grasp a pencil (or another writing utensil).

With winter and cold weather all around us, here are some fun activities you can do indoors with your kids while at the same time helping to prepare them for writing!

Thank you!

I can't believe it's already 2017! I love the start of a new year and the opportunity to make new goals, start over, and the longer days of sunlight! 2016 was a crazy year for us! Between moving and Natasha's birth, we had so much excitement!
